Steve Cornish
Head Coach U18YS Boys

Steve Cornish returns to Shattuck-St. Maryʼs after having been the Head Coach at NCAA DIvision I University of North Carolina Asheville for the past 17 years. During his tenure there, he guided the UNC Asheville team to some of the biggest wins in school history and was twice named Big South Coach of the Year. He has coached more than 30 All Conference and All South Region players and has had a number of players move on to gain professional contracts. He served as the Chair of the Big South Conference Menʼs Soccer committee as well as the NCAA South Atlantic Regional Advisory Committee.

Outside of UNC Asheville, Coach Cornish has been an ODP Regional Staff coach for both Region II and more recently, Region III. He has been a staff coach for both Minnesota and North Carolina youth soccer associations and has conducted numerous clinics around the country. He holds a USSF A license and a license from the English Football Association.

Steve Cornish will be a familiar face to some at Shattuck St. Maryʼs. He was a member of the mathematics faculty, and coached soccer and track at SSM from 1983 to 1992.
In 1987 he was the Teacher of the Year, and two years later was inducted into the Cum Laude Society. Steveʼs wife, Michele, joins us also from UNC Asheville, along with their
son Cameron and daughter Cheyney.

Patrick Tate
Assistant Coach U18YS Boys

Patrick Tate comes to Shattuck St. Mary’s after playing professionally in the United Soccer League (USL). Prior to going pro, Patrick graduated from the University of North Carolina Asheville with a BS in Management with a concentration in Business Administration.

A native of North Carolina, Patrick was a two time all-region and all-state center midfielder at South Mecklenburg High School, and played for the Charlotte United Futbol Club.

After attending East Carolina University for his freshman year, Patrick transferred to UNCA to play for Coach Steve Cornish. A three year starter, Patrick was selected to the Big South all-conference team and two all-tournament teams his senior year, as well as named the UNC-Asheville Male Athlete of the Year.

After signing a professional contract with the Charleston Battery, Patrick was loaned out to the Wilmington Hammerheads, where he played right back and helped guide the team to a regular season title.
